Week of January 30, 2017

During our literacy block this week we will continue our money unit.  We have examined various currencies and we have been talking about needs and wants.  This week we will write a story about a need we have and a want we have.

During math we are working on solving addition and subtraction number stories.  We will talk about equal sets and we will continue to work with teen numbers.

We are observing how water changes wood and recording our observations.  We will also talk about Ground Hog Day and make some predictions of our own.

Our words of the week are:  look, have

We will also work with short "o" word families.

Please continue to practice letters/sounds and sight words with your child.  It is important to read with your child and discuss stories.

Week of January 23, 2017

During our literacy block this week we will continue our unit on Spending, Saving and Sharing.  We will look at our money and some money from other countries as well.  We will discuss needs and wants.  We will also write about a need we have as well as a want.

During our math we will continue to work with teen numbers, we will work on number name collections (show various ways to represent a number) and work with addition number stories.

In science we continue to think about things made of wood and observe properties of wood.

Our sounds/words of the week are:  th, here, with.

Wednesday, January 25th is an early dismissal day.

Please continue to practice letters/sounds, sight words and counting to 100 with your child.

It is important to read with your child often and discuss the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Week of January 17, 2017

During our literacy block we are working on our new unit - Spending, Saving and Sharing.  We are examining money and what we use money for.  We will write about what we would like to save money to buy.

During math we will continue to work with teen numbers and to work with the 100 number grid.  We continue to practice counting to 100 and to write our numbers to 30.

During science we will continue our exploration of wood and various kinds of wood and where wood comes from.   We also will continue reading stories about winter and doing some special projects.

Before winter break we  read "The Polar Express" and got our own silver bell.

We attended a wonderful presentation today by Greg Tang.  The children were engaged and really enjoyed the games he played.  There are a number of games that can be found on his website
gregtangmath.com.  I would encourage you to explore the site and games with your child.

January 9, 2017

During our literacy block we will read winter stories and do some winter projects.  We will work on retelling - characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  We will also write some winter stories with a beginning, middle and end.

We will read and do some special projects to help us learn about Martin Luther King, Jr.

In math we will spend some more time exploring calculators, and will work with a pan balance scale and talk about weight.  We also are beginning to work with numbers 11-20.

We will be starting our science unit - Wood and Paper and explore things made of wood in or classroom.

Our letter/words of the week are: "Ss", am, play, do.
Please keep practicing letters/sounds and sight words with your child.

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a very happy and restful holiday.

This week during our literacy block, we will finish our fairy tale unit.  We will read "Jack and the Bean Stalk" and "The Princess and the Pea".  We will then review the fairy tales we've read and write about our favorite fairy tale and why it is our favorite.

In math we will be working with pattern blocks and we will be working with teen numbers and using the tens frame.

We will be reading some special winter stories and doing some winter projects.
