February 29, 2016

This week we are starting a new unit during our literacy block about money.  We will read a book entitled "What is Money".  We will be writing our own booklets about facts we are learning about money.

In math we will be learning about the penny, the nickel, and the dime.  We are also working with shapes both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional.

We will be starting our Wood and Paper unit in science.

We will be reading some Dr. Seuss books this week and doing some special projects.

REMINDERS:
If you have any foreign coins, it would be appreciated if you could send them in since we are talking about money.

Please continue to work with your child practicing sight words and counting to 100.  Your child should also be able to write his first and last name.  Please encourage them to write their full name on their homework sheets now.  As always, I am grateful for your support and cooperation.

Week of February 22, 2016

During our literacy block this week we will continue to read stories and retell - characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  We will also continue to write stories with a beginning, middle and end.

We are beginning our school wide read aloud of the book "Crenshaw."

In math we will be learning about money - the penny and the nickel.  We will also be working with solid shapes.

We will continue to read stories and learn about contributions made by Black Americans in honor of Black History month.

Please continue to practice sight words and counting with your children.

Week of February 17th

This week during our literacy block we will read stories and work on vocabulary (interesting words) and retelling the story - characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  We will share our Eric Carle stories and then begin writing new stories including a beginning, middle and end in our stories.

In math we are working on counting to 100 and writing our numbers to 30.  We will compare numbers and do some addition and subtraction number sentences.

In February we celebrate Black History month so we will be reading about some interesting people who have made great contributions to our country.

Please keep working on sight words with your child so that they can read and write them correctly.  Also please continue to practice counting by 1's to 100 and by 10's to 100.

Thank you for all your support and it was wonderful to see so many parents at the special Valentine show that the children did.  It was great fun.

Week of February 8th

During our literacy block we will finish our Eric Carle unit.  We will retell some of the stories we read and think about our favorite Eric Carle book and why.  We are finishing our stories modeled after Eric Carle's style of writing and we will share our stories with our classmates.

In math we will be counting by 5's and 10's to 100.  We are using tally marks and will be doing addition and subtraction.

We will be talking about President's Day and read some books about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Week of February 1st

During our literacy block we will continue reading Eric Carle books.  We will focus on retelling - including characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  We will write about our favorite part of the story and why.  We are continuing to plan and get ready to write our own stories modeled after Eric Carle's style of writing.

In math we are working on counting by 1's to 100, 10's to 100 and 5's to 50.  We are working with measurement and tally marks.

We will talk about Ground Hog Day and do some special fun projects.
