Week of September 26, 2016

During our literacy block this week we will be reading ABC books and working with the letters and letter sounds.  We will try to label our pictures as we each pick a letter and draw things that begin with that letter sound.

During math we continue to work with graphs and understand why we graph information.  We will be  starting to answer survey question such as - do you like pizza and the children will respond to the question and then we will count, and compare.  We continue to work with numbers 1-9.

Monday is Johnny Appleseed's birthday.  We will read a story about him and do some special apple projects.  In addition this week, we will continue talking about fall and work on some special fall projects.

Please continue to review letters and letter sounds with your child as well as practicing the sight words.

Reminder:  Wednesday September 28th is an early dismissal day to allow for professional development.

We are continuing to get to know each other and working hard.

Week of September 19, 2016

During our literacy block this week, we will read several books with rhyming words and we will make a chart of the rhyming words we hear.  We will be drawing and labeling pictures of things that rhyme.

We also will be working on a poster of things we like to do.

During math we will be counting and writing numbers to 10.  We will make a class graph with our birthdays, and a graph with our ages.

We will continue our Brown Bear projects and put them together into a book.  We will begin to read fall stories and work on some special fall projects.

Our letters and words of the week are:
"c" "o" "a" "d".  We will learn the letters and the letter sound.  We will begin to put the letters together and blend the sounds to make words or just to make nonsense words - ex. doc, cod, cad.  We just want to start blending and sounding out.

Week of September 12, 2016

This week during our literacy block, we will learn about the parts of a book - cover, title page, title, author, illustrator.  We will continue learning the various "Daily Five" stations that we will be working at during literacy.  The stations are - read to self, read with a partner, word work, writing, listening and the teacher station where I will work with small groups.

We are drawing and will begin to label our pictures to express our thoughts.

In math we will be measuring and talking about shapes.  We will begin working on numbers 1-10 counting and writing.  We will look for numbers all around us.

We will work with the letters "c" and "o".

Our sight words this week are "and" "to".  Please have your child read these words and spell these words.  I will send home the first group of words we will be working on.  You can cut the words apart to use as flash cards.

We worked on a red bird project after reading "Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?"
We are also learning how to read to self - using the pictures to tell the story and how to
read to a partner.  You can see that we are getting to know each other and quickly making new friends.
