Week of December 19, 2016

During our literacy block, we will continue to work on fairy tales and retelling the story by acting out or story maps.  We will be reading "Lon Po Po",  "The Little Red Hen" and "The Gingerbread Boy".  We are continuing to chart our holiday traditions and then we will write about a tradition our family has and share our writing with our friends.

In math we are working with shapes and graphing this week.  We also will be introduced to the calculator.

We continue to work on holiday projects and listen to holiday stories.

Thank you to all the parents who came to conferences.   I really enjoyed meeting with everyone.

REMINDER:
Friday, December 23rd is an early dismissal day and our mom's or someone special lunch at 11:15.   Please bring a lunch for you and your child.  After lunch, we will make our candy houses.

Week of December 12, 2016

During our literacy block we continue to read and retell fairy tales.  This week we will read another version of "Cinderella".  We will read "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" and "The Little Red Hen."  We are retelling - characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.

During math we will be working with numbers and writing numbers.  We will sequence numbers.  We also will be working with shapes.

We are going to continue to share our December holiday traditions and then start to write about
one of our traditions.

Please continue to practice sight words and letters/letter sounds.  This week our letter of the week is "Rr" and our words are:  went, said.

REMINDER:
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week are early dismissal days for parent conferences.

Special News:
Giovanni's birthday was Friday and to celebrate Giovanni invited his dad,  a police officer, to come into our class and talk about his job.  It was a very exciting afternoon and the children learned a lot.
Thank you so much for your visit Officer Ed.









We enjoy indoor recess too on rainy, windy days.

Week of December 5, 2016

This week during our literacy block we will continue to read fairy tales and retell - characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  We will read Cinderella, Three Billy Goats Gruff and we will write about our favorite fairy tale and why.  We are continuing to work on writing our own fairy tale.

In math we continue to work with numbers and ordering numbers.

We are learning about December holidays and family traditions during this holiday season

Our letters/words of the week are:  "Bb", of, for.

REMINDERS:
Report cards go home this Friday.  I am looking forward to meeting with everyone over the next couple of weeks.

Week of November 28, 2016

During our literacy block we will continue to read fairy tales.  This week we will listen to "Pretty Salma" a South African fairy tale.  We will talk about the beginning, middle, and end, characters and setting.  We will finish our class fairy tale and begin our own fairy tales.

In math we will work with length - longer and shorter.  We will use position words - over, under, on, off etc.  We will continue counting and writing numbers in our number books.

We will talk about the winter holidays that are coming up and work on some special December holiday projects.

Our letters/words of the week are:  "u", "she", "he".  We also will review rhyming words and alliterations.

Week of November 21, 2016

This week during our literacy block we will continue our fairy tale unit.  We will read "Little Red Riding Hood" and discuss characters - character traits, setting, problem and solution.  We will continue to write our class fairy tale.

In math we will be working with the 10's frame and seeing how different combinations can make 10. We also will continue to work with graphs.

We are discussing Thanksgiving and thinking of things that we are thankful for.

Our words of the week are:  like    at
We are working with the "ch" sound.

Students should know all the first marking period sight words.  Please continue to practice letters/sounds and sight words with your child.

REMINDER
Our Thanksgiving feast is on Wednesday, November 23rd at 11:30AM.  We also have an early dismissal day on Wednesday.

Week of November 14, 2016

During our literacy block we will continue our fairy tale unit.  This week we will read and act out The Three Pigs.  We will also work on our class story which will include characters, setting, problem and solution.

In math we will work with solving number stories and graphing this week.  We also continue to work with numbers - counting and writing.  We continue to practice counting to 100.

We continue our Thanksgiving stories and projects.

Our letters/sounds, words of the week are:  "Pp" "yes" "no".
We also will talk about compound words.

Week of November 7, 2016

This is a short week.  Just a reminder there is no school for the students on Tuesday and Friday.

During our literacy block we will begin our fairy tale unit.  We will talk about what fairy tales are, about characters, setting, problem and solution.  We will also write a class story and together come up with characters, setting a problem and solution for our story.

In math we are working with shapes this week and will begin to solve number stories.

We will do some special Thanksgiving projects and talk about why we celebrate Thanksgiving.

Our letter/words of the week are:  "Kk", can, an.

We read the book "Duck For President".  We voted for the animal we wanted to be in charge of the barnyard.  We made posters supporting the animal we chose, we cast our ballot, we counted our ballots and got an "I Voted" sticker.  It was great fun.  Ask your child which animal won the election.

Week of October 31, 2016

During our literacy block we are reading stories and talking about characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  In our guided reading groups we are working at looking at the beginning sound and pictures to help us read unknown words.

We are continuing to work on writing a good sentence beginning with an upper case letter and ending with a punctuation mark.

In math we are meeting with students and asking them to identify numbers, count, write numbers, identify shapes, compare numbers etc.

We continue to work on fall projects and we will be spending time learning about the first Thanksgiving and what Thanksgiving means to us today.

Our letters/words of the week are:  "i", "j" "in" "on".

REMINDERS
The Story Book Character parade will be at 2:00.

Please remember to sign and return homework packets by Friday.  Homework is important to reinforce what we are working on in the classroom and to teach responsibility.

Week of October 24, 2016

During our literacy block this week we will continue to talk about characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of a story.  We will continue to think about strategies we can use to figure out words we do not know when we are reading.

We are continuing to work on writing a good sentence - begin with an upper case letter, end with a punctuation mark, spelling sight words correctly, sounding out unknown words.

We continue to work with the letters of the alphabet and the sounds the letters make.  We put sounds together to read words (ex. h o p; sound out each letter then blend to make word).  It is so important that your child knows the letters and letter sounds.  Please keep working with your child so that they know the letters and letter sounds.

In math we are sorting and patterning.  We continue to work with numbers 1-10 and think about how many we have if we add 1 or 2 to a given number.

We will read fall and pumpkin stories this week and work on some special projects.

Our letters and words of the week are:  "t" "i" "we" "go"

REMINDERS
Wednesday, October 26th is an early dismissal day.  Dismissal begins at 1:20PM.

A letter will go home about Halloween on Monday, October 31st.  Children may  not wear their costume to school.  It should be in a bag with their name on it.  We will help children get into their costumes and to take them off before dismissal.  Everyone is invited to the Storybook Characters parade which takes place at 2:00PM on Monday, October 31st.

Our trip to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center was fun.  We went to the barn first and we each got an apple to put in the hopper.  We were able to spin the wheel to mash the apple and eventually see the juice of the apple drip out.  We got to taste some apple cider.  We walked through the farm to see the animals and we had some time for the playground.
