Week of December 21, 2015

This week we will finish our nonfiction unit for Reader's and Writer's Workshop.  We will review what we have learned and we will share our nonfiction booklets that we wrote.

In math we will be writing numbers, playing some number games and working with addition number sentences.

We will do some special holiday projects this week and talk about the seasons - winter.

REMINDERS
Wednesday, December 23rd is our mom's lunch.  It is also an early dismissal day.

Week of December 14, 2015

In Reader's Workshop we are finishing our nonfiction unit.  Students will identify the main topic and recall key details.  Students will write facts they learned.

In Writer's Workshop students will continue to write facts learned from nonfiction books read.

In math we will compare numbers, we will count and write numbers to 30 and will solve number problems.

We continue to learn about December holidays.

Please send in the cartons that we will need for our holiday project next week as soon as possible.

Week of December 7, 2015

In Reader's Workshop we continue to read nonfiction books discussing the main topic and supporting details.  We are also adding to our chart of features of nonfiction books.

In Writer's Workshop we are finishing our stories about ourselves and will begin new stories writing about something we know a lot about.

In math we will continue to work with probability and addition number stories.

REMINDERS

We have early dismissal Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week for report card conferences.  I look forward to meeting with everyone.

Please sign the report card envelope and return it to school as soon as possible.

Notices went home about our special holiday lunch.  Please remember to send back the form and we will need the cartons  as soon as possible.  Thanks for all you do.

Week of November 30, 2015

This week in Reader's Workshop we will continue to read and discuss nonfiction books.  We will think about the topic and key details of the text and we will continue to chart features of nonfiction books.

In Writer's Workshop we will write facts about ourselves and things we can do.  We will add labels to our pictures.

In math we will be measuring length, talking about probability and solving number stories.

We will begin discussing and learning about December holidays and doing some special December projects.

Week of November 23rd

In Reader's Workshop this week we will continue to read nonfiction books and talk about the characteristics of nonfiction books - table of contents, glossary, labels etc.

In Writer's Workshop we are finishing our booklet on the five senses.

In math we will use the pan balance scale and continue with number stories.

We are finishing up some Thanksgiving projects.

Week of November 16th

This week in Reader's Workshop we will begin our nonfiction unit.  We will preview books and decide if they are fiction or nonfiction.  We will begin a chart of characteristics of nonfiction books and we will be reading several nonfiction books about animals.

In Writer's Workshop we will read a book about the five senses.  We will then begin our own informational booklet about the five senses.

In math we will continue working with teen numbers, do some estimating and begin solving number stories.

We continue to talk and learn about the first Thanksgiving as well as do some special projects.

Due to the weather, our field trip to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center has been canceled.   New permission slips will go home once a new date is determined.

Week of November 9th

In Reader's Workshop we will talk about how good readers visualize and think about the story they are reading.  We will discuss how pictures and context can help us figure out words.

In Writer's Workshop we will continue to write stories about our experiences and include a beginning, middle and end.  We will try to stretch out words we want to use in our writing.  We will try to add details to our pictures.

In math we will continue to work with place value and teen numbers.  We will work with patterning and shapes.

We will learn about the first Thanksgiving and do some special Thanksgiving projects.

Last week we made cards for our Veterans.  Below are some pictures of the class working on their cards.
















REMINDERS:

Our Field Trip is on Tuesday.  Please dress your children for the weather.

Wednesday is Veteran's Day and a holiday for the students.

Week of November 2nd Continued

Yesterday we discussed Election Day and voted in our room for our favorite snack.  We had three choices:   apples, carrots, popcorn.   Popcorn won our vote - so we will have a popcorn snack this week.

Week of November 2nd

In Reader's Workshop we will discuss our opinions about books we have read.  As we read we will ask and answer questions to help us better understand the story.  We will discuss character feelings.

In Writer's Workshop we will stretch and sound out words as we write.  We will write stories about experiences we have had with family and friends.

In Math we wil review numbers, teen numbers, shapes, patterns and counting.

We will talk about election day and veteran's day this week.

Week of October 26th

This week in Reader's Workshop we will work on retelling a story - thinking about characters, setting, beginning, middle and end.  We will also share our opinion about stories we have read.

In Writer's Workshop we will talk about what a good sentence should look like and we will write a story together.  We will also make a list of topics that we can write about.

In math we will continue to work with teen numbers and we will learn about estimating.

We are continuing to talk about being good citizens in school, at home and in our community.

Wednesday, October 28th is an early dismissal day.

Friday, October 30th is the Halloween Parade at 2:00PM and parties will follow.  Please send your child's costume in a bag with their name, and we will get them into their costumes before the parade.
